IMPORTANT THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VMware

VMware is a cloud computing virtual software that was founded in 1998.  It is a subsidiary of Dell Technologies after its acquisition in 2016. Despite the acquisition by Dell, a private company, VMware is publicly traded. The software is compatible with Linux, Windows, and MacOS operating systems.

The founders of VMware

It was founded by a couple, Mendel Rosenblum and Diane Greene together with Ellen Wang, Scott Devine, and Edouard Bugnion. Diane Greene was the CEO until 2008 before being fired by the board. She was then replaced by Paul Maritz who held the position for four years. Patrick Paul Gelsinger took over the helm at VMware in 2012 and is still the CEO to date. The company has its headquarters in Palo Alto, California.

VMware’s Products

VMware remains a market leader for hypervisors. Their hypervisors have since evolved into two product lines: type 1 and type 2 hypervisors– with the former running directly on hardware and the latter hosted. They are also synonymous with virtualization software and workstations. VMware makes it possible to store data virtually without the need of external storage.

• The Virtual San pools all data collected from flash disks or disks and stores it in an easy-to-use cluster.

• The vSphere 4 enables the user to visualize their server by running directly on the metal servers.

• Their desktop products enable the user to supply virtual desktops on demand to their clients who can connect to them via Remote Desktop Control Protocol or DCPIOP.

VMware’s Revenues and Earnings

According to FactSet, in the third quarter of the fiscal year 2017-2018, VMware’s net income rose from $319 million to $443 million. The company’s licensing revenue rose to $785 million, a 13.6 p.c. increase. Overall revenue rose was $1.98 billion which was an 11 p.c. increase. Following competition from other firms like Amazon’s AWS and Microsoft’s Azure, VMware offloaded infrastructure-as-a-business services and plowed back the returns to other areas with more potential.

With many people renting IT services on the internet, the future of Cloud computing seems to be very bright. VMware’s recent partnerships with giants like Amazon, Google and IBM are a reflection that there is a consistent and growing demand to better cloud computing services in this digital age.
